1969 Porsche 912 Golden Green 6828 Long Wheelbase
History
CBY was born in Stuttgart 29th May 1969 so is 50yrs old this year! and bought by an American in Arizona. There is little paperwork from CBY’s American life. CBY was then imported from the US to the UK in 1991 and renovated in 1998 based on a 912 buyer’s guide article in Classic Cars magazine June 1998 edition
Engine maintained by Andy Prill / Bare Metal Respray in Original golden green colour 6828 March 1997; Restoration Bodywork & Interior by Respond Complete March 1997; Maintenance by Gantspeed.
Houndstooth and Leather seats, Speaker system unusual.
CBY has the original petrol fuelled auxiliary heater located in the smugglers box in the front luggage compartment. This extra storage was apparently useful to smuggle drugs across the US Mexican border until the border guards got to know of this unique feature.
5 speed gearbox with dogleg first / Five gauge dashboard / Long wheelbase
1600cc engine flat 4 cylinder original Porsche engine.
CBY has been scrutinised by Max at Revival Cars who described CBY as ‘generally good, strong and in original condition.’ CBY will be fitted with a new exhaust, rear bushes and bonnet seal / indicator seals. Recently fitted with a new battery, bonnet struts and new dynamo which included replacing the oversized VW Cooling fan – that was too big for the fan shroud. It had to be prised out and replaced with the correctly sized Porsche fan.
Gear linkage has been replaced but still makes changing gear the best antitheft device on the car! The electrics are a constant cause of fun/irritation.
Recently a neighbour backed into the front damaging the bonnet with an inch long dent. The whole bonnet was resprayed with a colour match: not Golden Green now!
At some point, the front license plate had been screwed into the rubber surround with a couple of rusty screws. Now sympathetically stuck on under front bumper.
CBY is regularly driven. CBY is no Garage Queen. CBY is run in the rain with no problems. However, not driven when the roads are salted.
The Model
Porsches 912 were considered the poor relation to the 911. It was made to bridge the price gap between the 365 and 911. The bodywork and finish is the same as the 911, the only difference being the 4 cylinder engine. The long wheelbase car was extended to give the 911 safer road handling. The 912’s road handling is better as the engine is lighter so the weight is more evenly distributed.
