On its release in March 1961, Enzo Ferrari dubbed it "the most beautiful car ever made". In 2004 it was placed number one on the list of "Top Sports Cars of the 1960's" by magazine Sports Car International. In March 2008, it was ranked first in The Daily Telegraph's list of the world's "100 most beautiful cars of all time". The Jaguar E-Type (also known as the Jaguar XK-E in North American) was manufactured between 1961 and 1975. Its combination of high performance, aesthetic beauty and competitive pricing established the model as an icon of the motoring world. The E-Type's top speed of 150 mph (241 km/h), sub-7-second acceleration from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h), disc brakes, independent front and rear suspension, rack-and-pinion steering and monocoque construction distinguished the car from others and led to changes across the motoring industry. The E-Type was based on Jaguar's D-Type racing car which, for 3 years running from 1955 had won the 24 Hours of Le Mans and employed a novel racing design principle whereby a front subframe carried the engine, and with front suspension and front bodywork bolted directly to the body tub. No ladderfame chassis was required, meaning that the first cars weighed only 1315 kg (2900 lb).
